Live Green CT: A Zero-Waste Affair

This past weekend we had the pleasure of sponsoring Live Green Connecticut!’s 4th-annual festival bringing together environmental educators, nonprofits, and businesses alike to showcase the latest in green technology, recycling, conservation, health and wellness, climate protection, and sustainable living. Last week we wrote about our goal to “Make a Green Fest Greener” and we did just that.

As part of our sponsorship, we helped Live Green compost all food waste generated at the event. As noted in the video above from It’s Relavant, “Everything being thrown out this weekend will eventually find its way back to Norwalk.”

During an interview at the event Andy Holtz, our Director of Development and Advancement, highlighted how composting works to close the food waste loop: “The food you eat today and the plate you eat it on will tomorrow end up making more food.” He continued on to say, “It’s very convenient to just throw something away; it takes more thought to compost it or recycle it — and we want people to take that extra thought.” Taking that “extra thought” as Andy calls it is a simple behavioral change that can result in real, dramatic results. America wastes 40% of its food, and of all the food that is lost ‘from farm to fork,’ only 3 percent is composted.

This year’s event was a huge success and is part of our goal to reduce food waste by 50% by 2035. In October, we’ll be in Austin helping to make SXSW Eco a zero-waste event as their official Food & Waste Education Partner.
